Dante and Keats are 10-year-old brothers who came into rescue due to their owner?s sudden illness. They are awesome boys, very well behaved, very well crate trained, and apparently very well potty trained, although that is hard to call during summertime!
They love to be petted and cuddled, they LOVE to play fetch, although Keats lost most of his teeth during his recent dental, and I am still working to find just the right toy for him to retrieve. I also think that in time he will realize that he really can still carry most toys. That said, he loves chasing Dante and ?helping? him fetch. I have been feeding them slightly moistened dry food, and both do just fine with that. They were both quite chubby when they entered rescue, so would do well with someone who would pet them a lot rather than giving treats.
Dante and Keats have been a bit spoiled lately, they immediately took to sleeping under the covers in bed, but for anyone who doesn?t like that they are also extremely good about being crated. My guess is that these two would be fine with the run of the house during the day, but that will have to be tested.
They get along well with my dogs, and Keats couldn?t care less about cats, but it has taken Dante a little while to adjust to them. At first he seemed very disturbed and would bark if a cat walked by him, but he seems to be fine around them now. Dante barks a bit, but it isn?t too bad (pretty much only when they are outside and hear other dogs, and much less often while they are indoors), and this might be a plus from a home security stand point as they sound much bigger than they are!
Adopting senior dogs always comes with a few challenges, and while these two are very healthy for their age, Dante does have a history of seizures. He had three seizures within about 2 ½ weeks after coming into rescue, but he is now on an anti-seizure medication that has a low incidence of side effects (Zonisamide), and it doesn?t seem to have any negative effects for him at all. The good news is that he hasn?t had a single seizure since starting this medication; the bad news is that he will likely need it twice a day for the rest of his life. But with pill pockets giving Dante his medication is effortless!
As someone who has adopted several seniors I do also want to point out that the rewards are endless, and as energetic and playful as they are, Dante and Keats likely have many good years left
